I never went to art school, I studied Mad Magazine instead. I grew up in the flat plains of Michigan, then spent ten years in New York City as a yuppie. In 1987 I thought it might be fun to be a ski bum for a winter in Wyoming. Unfortunately, after living and skiing in the Rockies, it was impossible to return to my previous life in the Big City. I taught advanced outdoor skills in remote wilderness areas, from Alaska to the desert southwest. I now live in the Pacific Northwest where my time is divided between illustration and writing books.
Cartoonists draw tiny curved lines to imply motion. The image here has four of these, two near the horn in his helmet, and two more near his cape. I created a similar website back in 2009 and I (somewhat obsessively) pointed these out, and there were a LOT of them! That site is still up—it's linked below.
